Of the many drug related cases that teen addiction rehabs get, one of the most common ones include Ecstasy addiction.  Also referred to as ‘X’ and ‘XTC’, Hug, ‘Love Drug, Lover’s Speed and Beans; this recreational drug which is used mostly in club parties and raves is increasingly abused by people in their teens and early 20s.  The scientific name for Ecstasy is MDMA or methylenedioxymethamphetamine and is known to have properties that can mimic the effects of that of hallucinogens and stimulants.

Various rave parties that have been busted in US and many other places in the world have shown that the youth revels in taking these drugs.  It is actually a banned substance because it has been used largely for date rapes. There have been many cases of boys trying to spike drinks of girls with ecstasy in order to make her sexually promiscuous with them.

The drug has the potency to reach the brain in less than 18 minutes and the pleasurable feelings of mirth and ‘ecstasy’ lasts for nearly 6 hours.  Funny sensations, increased sensitivity, manipulated perceptions of people and time are some of the symptoms that are identifiable with ecstasy.  This is the reason why some people with ulterior motives, usually lust, tend to take advantage of gullible people by using this drug.  The other symptoms that have been reported include chills, dizziness and sweatiness.

The trauma of having indulged in sexual relations against her wish can harangue the girl no end and along with the feeling of guilt comes the deep seated depression and self-hatred. There have been cases of girls’ uteruses being damaged due to an overdose in certain cases.  In other cases, girls and boys get hooked to the drug big-time because their mind begins to attach pleasurable feelings to the drug.  These drugs are not just abused at rave parties but even at close-knit parties at home. Teens are blissfully ignorant that Ecstasy can cause a variety of health problems including liver damage, kidney problems, blood pressure and even cardiac arrest, leading to death.

Teenage treatment facilities have pointed out that 3 percent of teens have actually used this drug by the time they complete the eighth grade. This number can go up to 9 percent when the student finishes the tenth grade. Compared to people in their late teens, Ecstasy is abused more among people in their early teens and mid-teens.

Very less people know that Ecstasy is a manufactured drug and the proportions of chemicals used in the mixture can differ.  Since most companies that manufacture them are of spurious nature, there is a high chance that these will contains a deadly mixture of poison and carcinogenic (cancer-causing) substances.  The drugs are marketed and sold in a packing with funky or cute appeal to attract gullible teens.

As parents and responsible adults, you have to make sure that teens do not fall pretty to these temptations.  You may do well discouraging children from going to such parties and nightclub; in case too much self-indulgence during teenage at places like night clubs is not advisable.  Some of the signs that are visible in people who are using Ecstasy include slurred speech, inability to focus or concentrate,  grinding teeth, clenching jaw movements and of course, dropping academic grades.  When the teen is too much into this addiction, it is better to take him or her to a adolescent treatment center.

Teen rehabilitation centers have been credited with not only treating but preventing teen depression from growing into mammoth proportions. As a parent, you should be sensitive to your child’s feeling and be earnest enough to find out what is bothering him or her. You should not hesitate to find out what is wrong with your child and try your level best to help him or her get rid of the depression.

Is depression genetic? There are some studies that say so but then even if it is in your DNA; it can be prevented.   One tends to be stressed and depressed when one is having high amount of expectations and when such a thing does not happen, a person feels angry, sad, frustrated and stressed which in turns lead to depression. Stress is said to turn into depression when a person is not able to function normally and his mind is continuously disturbed by negative thoughts almost throughout the day.

Some of the symptoms that can be attributed to teen depression include academic problems, relationship problem, health problem, peer pressure, loss of a pet, trouble in the family, parental issues, death of a loved one-basically anything that can render it almost impossible for a person to act normally.

Here are some ways suggested by teen recovery programs, in common, to prevent depression

Be associated with positive, happy and non-judgmental people. Keep an open attitude towards life and think that no matter what happens, there is a way to solve it.
Dig into the support system of your family members, friends and teachers. Do not bottle in your thoughts, share them with people you trust and can give well-meaning advice; this can definitely make you feel light and happier.
Eat a good diet that comprises fruit, vegetable and nuts. It is shown that eating red meat and oily food can make a person feel stressful because they can increase the blood pressure in the body.
Get 8 hours of sleep so that the mind and the body feel fresh. It has been seen that if you are stressed, you tend to feel better if you take a nap for some time.
Exercise at least three times a week, it can work wonders.
Keep a schedule of events that you’d like to do in a day. This will not over-burden you and you will find a sense of rhythm and balance in your life.
Read positive books, watch good films to make you feel better. It is possible that loss of someone near and dear can obviously make you feel sad but  you should learn to accept that life can be bitter-sweet and everyone has problems.

As a parent, friend or well-wisher if you feel that the teen is suffering from too much stress, tell him or her to take it easy. You can also take him or her to a good teen rehab facility where the counselors will be able to chat with him, and use cognitive therapy and anti-stress therapies to make the teen feel better and positive about life.

Emotionally Abusive Relationship Intervention – 3 Keys to Freeing Yourself from Emotional Abuse

A psychologist in India recently asked me to write about the following – How can a woman, one without access to professional help, take steps towards freeing herself from an emotionally abusive relationship?

As I think about this question, I realize that this was the inspiration for my writing in the first place. I wanted to reach battered women who requested, but could not afford, my professional services.

In my writings over the last three years, I have focused on the psychology of relationship violence. There are a number of important learning steps to freeing yourself from emotional abuse…

1) Recognize that verbal, psychological and emotional abuse are not about you.

The cruel words that your abusive partner freely flings at you and the hurtful emotional manipulations that he plays on you say more about him than they say about you.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the specifics are merely the convenient bullets used effortlessly because of their convenience. For example, if he picks on you because of your weight or puts you down over your intellect, recognize that he grabs for what’s in his reach.

He may even batterer you with an innermost vulnerability that you intimately shared with him on an earlier occasion. So, while the words and abusive conduct may be relevant to your life or your experience, be mindful that they are simply used as the darts to throw because they are conveniently within his reach.

2) See the battering assaults for what they are.

Batterers strike for one reason and one reason alone. They seek to transform their own vulnerability into invincibility relative to you.

Battering, whether emotional abuse, verbal abuse or physical abuse, is an attempt to create or maintain unequal distribution of power in an intimate relationship. It is a strategy to consciously, and often unconsciously, exert control.

You probably know that abuse is fundamentally about control. And when an abuser feels he’s losing his grip, violence will escalate so as to re-engage control. The way in which you experience this is that his emotional assault will be enhanced in direct proportion to his vulnerability.

So, you must see that the act of being emotionally abusive is his way of reconciling his own perceived impotence. It is not an expression of his power; rather, it is an expression of his own personal vulnerability.

3) Find the YOU behind the assault.

This key is ultimately what gives you the strength to not just merely survive, but to thrive in the face of emotional abuse. And ultimately, it is what allows you to break free from an emotionally abusive relationship.

When you know the YOU within yourself, you refuse to be defined by your partner’s emotional assaults. You draw an enduring strength from this knowing that serves to support your higher good.

In my own life, the practice of meditation allowed me to cultivate an alliance with the essence uniting all of us. And from here, I was no longer entrapped by intimate partner abuse.

Breaking Free or Overcoming Emotional Abuse

Now for some women, the ultimate breaking free may entail leaving the relationship and seeking refuge outside of the home shared with their abusive partner. And for others, it may involve inspiring their partner’s participation in an appropriate domestic abuse intervention program. This is most likely to happen as a result of the emotional abuse victim engaging in her own psychotherapeutic process.

Be mindful that you—and only you—can know the right path for yourself. There are no right and wrong answers when it comes to domestic abuse. There are only decisions that support your safety and the realization of your highest good.

If you are in an emotionally abusive relationship and lack any financial resources for professional help, read from the Internet and from your local library as much as you can about the dynamics of abusive relationships. And in your moment of emergency, reach out to your local community charity agencies that support battered women.

Innovative, In-Depth Sauna Detoxification Provides Vital Relief from Cravings for Recovering Addicts

It’s one of those “everybody knows” data: It’s the irresistible cravings that make drug or alcohol addiction so hard to beat. Cravings for addictive prescription drugs, illicit drugs or alcohol are so strong that addicts will feel like life itself is dependent on getting and consuming their addictive substance.

In fact, drug and alcohol abuse creates cravings in two distinctly different ways. Drugs and alcohol rob the body of essential nutrients and that depletion causes tiredness, pain and cravings that an addict may want to cover up with more drug or alcohol use. Plus these substances leave behind toxic residues stored in the fatty tissues that are easily reactivated by stress, exercise or intense emotion.

These stored residues can interfere with hormones that affect moods and energy levels. That disruption causes cravings for what the body lacks or a similar substance, such as the drugs that originally caused the disruption. The reactivated residues can also act as a physical trigger for memories of drug-related experiences and discomforts from the past, causing a desire for more drugs or alcohol at these times.

The solution? A thorough detoxification of residual drug or alcohol toxins with a carefully-monitored program of exercise, sweating in a sauna and nutritional supplements. This is the Narconon New Life Detoxification Program, developed by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard in the late 1970s.

“The Narconon New Life Detoxification Program has been helping people eliminate their cravings for nearly 30 years,” stated Ryan Thorpe, Director of Admissions at Narconon Arrowhead, one of the country’s leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. “Our sauna detoxification program is a major reason we have a seventy percent success rate two years after graduation from our program. It is such a powerful program that those on this program talk about smelling or re-sensing the drugs being emitted from their bodies while they are in the sauna.”

After receiving medical approval to start, and under continuous and close supervision, people on this program exercise to stimulate circulation, spend time in a dry sauna and take a specific regimen of vitamins and minerals proven to support thorough detoxification. The end result of this program is a person who can think more clearly and whose physical cravings have been alleviated. The positive effect of this program is clearly evident in this compilation of comments from those who completed it:

“My sleep is great, my thoughts are clear and I don’t think about drugs anymore…” “I had the scent of alcohol coming out of me…” “My senses have improved enormously…” “The aches and pains have subsided and I can sleep for eight hours straight…” “Depression is now a thing of the past…” “(The) sauna (program) has also made me more calm and has gotten rid of my compulsive thoughts about using drugs…” “I don’t have that foggy feeling in my head that I used to have…” “I am not an evil person like I was on drugs.”

From Neurons to Nirvana

Please contribute financial resources to allow me to finish this film via — indiegogo.com/From-Neurons-to-Nirvana From Neurons to Nirvana: Psychedelic Medicine in the 21st Century Banned worldwide from research labs for nearly 35 years, mind-altering drugs from Ecstasy to LSD are again becoming the focus of serious scientific study and innovative psychotherapy. Researchers in several centers, including John Hopkins and the University of California, are conducting experiments on human subjects to treat a range of afflictions: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), addictions, and the psychological stresses suffered by late-stage terminal cancer patients. The initial results of all these studies: remarkable. From Neurons to Nirvana, a feature documentary in development, has already shot several interviews with the world’s foremost researchers and pioneering psychedelic psychotherapists. It is poised to tap into a phenomenon which has only recently touched the mainstream media. CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta showed Iraq War PTSD veterans who testified to the efficacy of therapy enhanced by Ecstasy. A double-page spread in The Economist magazine stated, “Ecstasy may be good for those who can’t get over something truly horrible.” What’s new is that these drugs and therapies are not being presented as dangerous or irresponsible, but as rational and valuable additions to our psycho-pharmacopoeia.

Wounds of Humanity: What Jesus Saw from the Cross

This video offers a meditation on the various wounds of sin which plague humanity, wounds that were borne by Jesus on the Cross. The meditation begins with the denial of God by eliminating prayer and then progresses through wounds such as infidelity, divorce, and abortion to arrive at cold indifference. The drama of Christ’s Passion shows how Divine Mercy can transform these wounds into life and holiness providing we turn back to God in prayer. The video serves as an excellent Lenten Meditation on the Way of the Cross and on the Christian meaning of human suffering.

From Stilettos To Moccasins

A song and music video entitled From Stilettos to Moccasins was developed from the findings of a research project that examined the role of identity and stigma in Aboriginal women’s healing from illicit drug abuse in Canada. The song was written in 2009 by Aboriginal women who are healing from illicit drug abuse and problems with the law, and those who are helping them on their journeys. It is sung by Violet Naytowhow, a Cree singer/songwriter and Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards nominee from Prince Albert, SK. The video is directed by Mae Star Productions in Saskatoon, SK. An accompanying discussion guide is currently under development. For more information on the project, please visit: www.addictionresearchchair.com This project is based on a partnership among the University of Saskatchewan, the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, and the National Native Addictions Partnership Foundation. Tips to Help Save Your Overweight Child from Obesity

I received an email from a woman the other day who has two overweight boys who are about to hit puberty. She is obese and wants the three of them to find a way to beat this now before the boys get much older. Having been an obese teen myself, I know the horrors and humiliation a young child feels when they do not fit into the current styles, cannot keep up with the other kids physically, and are the brunt of fat jokes. It is not a fun place to be.

My parents did not know how to help me and I did not know how to ask for help. I wish I had because maybe I would have found ways to break my bad food habits way back then instead of waiting until my late forties.

Helping someone deal with something you have never experienced yourself is hard, or even if you have experienced it, your reaction may not be the best. My father had been chubby around thirteen and was teased for it. He felt the best way to help me was to humiliate me constantly. I guess he felt, better him than someone else. Needless to say that backfired.

As I work with obese adults I hear similar stories of how their parents perpetuated or even caused their obesity. Here are a few of the reasons they give.

Mother had major eating issues she transferred to me

This is common. A mother who is obsessive about her own weight, and I am talking mothers who only have ten to thirty pounds to lose, transfer that food obsession onto their children.

Examples of this would be putting their daughters on strict diets when they are young and still just have that pouchy baby fat. Mothers who obsess over weight very often transfer that to their children, especially to their daughters. They want there girls to have perfect little bodies or rationalize dieting will keep their girls from every having to live through that extra ten pounds they feel keeps them from being perfect.

This tends to backfire and causes many eating disorders. Children rebel and in that rebellion their relationship to food becomes skewed. Don’t make your children afraid of food, instead give them healthy abundant choices and understand that when they go out with their friends, if it is a pizza party, they want to fit in and eat the pizza too.

Parent in an attempt to help the chubby child singled her out for special diets.

Many clients have told me that in an attempt to help them when they were young, their parent had them on strict diets as early as ten years old. Come the holiday when siblings got to eat lots of goodies, theirs came sugar free. No ten year old wants sugar free chocolate. Not only does it taste nasty, it singles the child out making her feel less than.

This behavior by parents is done out of love, but it usually backfires because the moment the child is of age to buy her own goodies, she will take on binging behaviors. Instead of learning to enjoy one or two chocolates, she has learned that to get to eat the good stuff she must do it in private to not get caught. That fear of getting caught will causes her to eat fast and excessively as she is afraid she will not get to do it again soon enough.

This type of behavior also causes shame. Once shame and guilt are associated with food it is hard to recover to eating properly. So many adults use food to almost punish themselves. It is a love/hate relationship. And it is destructive in nature.

Parent(s) were obese and eating was a family affair.

Some children can find their way past this, but others are set off on the wrong direction right from the get go. If you are obese, it is your responsibility as a parent to bring only healthy good food into your children’s lives. You sitting around eating junk food every night or making late night trips to the local KFC is teaching your child bad fat habits that they may never be able to break. No one likes being obese. If you love your children, you are going to have to start making health a family affair. There are no other options.

As an obese person yourself, you have issues about your weight you have to deal with. Life is tough, but being able to put your children’s health over your own food addictions could be the best thing that happened to you. Many people can’t seem to diet for themselves, but if they thought that it would be good for their children the incentive could be stronger.

Emotional Risks From Being Overweight

When the risks of being overweight are considered, it’s often from the perspective of physical risk. In other words, warnings about being overweight are typically warnings about physical health risks. This approach makes a good deal of sense, as being overweight does in fact present numerous risks to one’s physical well-being.

An overlooked aspect when discussing the risks of being overweight, however, are the emotional difficulties that overweight people often cope with. Being overweight can be a terrific psychological burden, which is typically expressed in one of two ways: through personal interaction, or through self-assessment. With respect to personal interaction, having an overweight physique is frequently a lead-in to criticism. This reality can be especially painful for overweight children. Children are often overly frank and even cruel in their criticisms. A child who is overweight can be bombarded with insults and verbal assaults by peers because of their body type. And the notion that childhood hurt isn’t especially significant is not necessarily accurate. People who were overweight as children can be extremely sensitive, often because they were harassed as children by their peers for being overweight, and they still feel hurt by those criticisms.

It’s not only overweight children who are criticized, however. Adults can nag and harass and even insult other adults who are overweight. In fairness, adult criticism directed towards other adults who are overweight is often expressed from concern. The reality is that being overweight is a very effective method for shortening life span. Because they don’t want to see people they care for die or become ill, adults can make inquiries of overweight acquaintances. These inquiries can feel like harassment though if they’re delivered in an abrupt way or come often.

The self-assessment of an overweight person can be even harsher than the external criticism they may receive. Western societies particularly have a biases against fat people. The thinking often goes that overweight people are unattractive and/or lazy and undisciplined. People who are overweight are not immune to this perception. In fact, overweight people are often extremely unkind to themselves and flagellate themselves over their body image. Though understandable, this type of verbal assault against oneself rarely results in a positive outcome. A more likely outcome from harsh self-criticism is depression and an even worse sense of self-esteem.

All of this isn’t to say that a person should lose weight to appease someone else, or so that they’ll be more acceptable to society. Weight loss should come about because an individual wants to do it first and foremost for him or herself. This is inner motivation, and inner motivation lasts.

Zinn Jeremiah writes about a number of different subjects. Get weight loss help resources by visiting fitness program or weight loss system.
