How to Get Help For Defiant Teens – What Frustrated Parents Need to Know

If you’re trying to find help for defiant teens, then you have probably tried a number of things that haven’t really worked. You may be frustrated and ready to give up, but don’t. Instead, read this article to find out about the different options available for help.

When parents get tired of dealing with defiant teens, they often think of resorting to drastic measures like sending their teenager away to boot camp. Although these camps can be effective for some kids, they are very pricey and some of them resort to punitive measures that can be dangerous to the health and well-being of the children in their care. Although no parent would knowingly send their teen to such a camp, it is important to review the policies and philosophy of the boot camp before entrusting your child to them.

Many of these boot camps that offer help for defiant teens have web sites that detail all the information that you’ll need to get a good idea of the techniques they will use to turn your kid around. While this information is important, you should also ask for references and make sure to call them. Also check with the Better Business Bureau in the area to find out if there have been any complaints about the camp. If you do send your teen away, be aware that this can cause more problems, as your teenager may see this as an outright rejection.

Another option for dealing with defiant teens is to get your child therapy. A therapist who specializes in “behavioral therapy” is what you want. Behavioral therapy is designed to create observable changes in behavior.

Therapy can be quite effective, especially if you find a smart therapist who knows how to get past your teen’s defenses and connect with him. Although all therapists are trained in behavioral techniques, not all of them will be able to bond with your teen in the same way. Therapy does take time because the therapist must get to know your child, how he operates and what his issues are in order to help him change. It’s important to know going in that not all kids are open to talking about their problems with a stranger. If your teen won’t open up, then the therapy is less likely to work.

A third option is to buy a behavioral program that you can use at home to help turn around your teen. Behavioral techniques are not rocket science, so you don’t need to be a trained professional to learn how to use them. A good at home program will teach you exactly what to do to create observable changes in your teen’s behavior.

The benefits of an at-home program are many. First, instead of having someone else deal with your teen, you will learn how to use the skills that the professionals use. This means you will be much better equipped to help your teen. It also means that you won’t have to consult with a professional every time you have a problem. Instead, you just review the at-home program.

Another big plus is that as your teen’s behavior starts to change, he will credit you with helping him to turn his life around which opens the way for a stronger parent-child bond, making this an excellent way to get help for defiant teens.

Whichever option seems best to you, don’t wait. Dealing with defiant teens does not get easier unless you do something and do it fast.

Health Community for Teens ? Know the Teen Health Issues

Reaching the teenage is the most beautiful transition of a lifetime. The kid gets to break the bounds and enter a carefree age of fun and enthralling lifestyle. But these years can also be dreadful as every year many youths are not certain about the teen health and go beyond limits that would easily make their lives miserable. Hence it is more apt for any youth to join a health community for teens where the person can join in the group and mingle among the other peers with similar philosophies.

One thing that the teens always are wary of is the difference in the thinking states of the adults and themselves. While the teenagers are carefree and more towards a recluse attitude, the adults pose a more mature thinking as they are bound by the social issues. The adults do not want their children to grow in to delinquencies and hence they, more often than not, end up being harsh on the child. The point here is to understand the teen and behave accordingly so as to not mess up with the kid’s sentiments. To gain respect one should give respect. One way to understand the teenagers is by joining in a health community for teens where the teenagers come in large numbers and share their philosophies on life and their issues on teen health. Teen health is always an issue among the parents as their children grow into more adult forms physically, but they are not yet mature in the mind. This imbalance leads the kids into dire consequences which could possibly be even permanent in mental or physical instability.

A health community for teens always focuses the discussion topics that pertain to the teen health and related issues such as the parent-child relationship, peer pressure, sex and relationships, and much more. Some of the common topics that are posted time and again for the members to be aware of are mentioned bellow:

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs): Since the physical bodies are changing shapes rapidly, it is highly natural for the person to be curious and inquisitive about the change. And to explore more the teens end up having unsafe sexual encounters. The children are not mature enough to know about their teen health and hence often ignore the precautions while engaging in the thrilling experiences. There are many dangers associated with sex and the health community for teens always includes this in their primary discussion agendas.  While there are many issues that are born out of sex which include teenage pregnancies, the first time experience and more, the biggest danger of all is the sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) that spread through unprotected sex. The teens should be aware of such diseases, their causes, and implications to practice safe sex every time.
Alcohol and Drug abuse: On getting on the teen health issues there always hovers a possibility of the kids falling into bad company and peer pressure and getting themselves addicted to socially unaccepted behaviors such as smoking, drinking, and even drugs. While some may consider light smoking and drinking acceptable, any degree of drug indulgence is called drug abuse. The law too entails the citizens to keep themselves away from the drugs as they are dangerous especially when used by an inexperienced user. The health community for teens communicates a clear message to all its members and educates them in drug abuse, its risks, and effects on teen health.

While these may be the primary motives of the talks, the subjects are not at all limited to them. By joining a good health community for teens the teens as well as their parents can get educated on such issues that relate to teen health.

Bodimojo is a health community for teens that drives a cause to educate the members ? teens and adults alike in teen health related issues and help them make a defining group of similar thinking individuals.

Nursing Home Abuse – What You Must Know

The elderly are in a vulnerable position, especially if they are living in a nursing home. They rely upon others to help them with daily activities and many require medical care that is vital to their survival. Care workers are screened before they work in a nursing home, but even the most precise screening cannot always detect someone who may be abusive towards residents. That is why keeping an eye out is the best way to stop nursing home abuse.

Types of Abuse

Nursing home abuse can take many forms. It can be abuse that is easily detected in the physical, it may be emotional or it can be financial. Some types of abuse may not be completely noticeable, but when you are properly informed about abuse you should be able to notice the signs of any type of abuse.

Physical abuse is the easiest type of abuse to recognize. It is apparent in physical signs like bruises or other injuries that are unexplained or abnormal for the resident. Physical abuse may also include the inappropriate use of drugs, which could present itself as odd behavior or more frequent and unusual complaints about pain.

Emotional abuse may be more difficult to recognize immediately. However, it is easily caught when workers are carefully monitored. Emotional abuse can include yelling at residents or talking to them in a disrespectful nature. It can also include ignoring the resident or keeping them from interacting with others.

Sexual abuse of elderly persons may also occur. It is any sexual contact with a person without their consent. It can also include showing pornographic materials to elders without their consent or making them watch sexual acts.

Neglectful behavior also constitutes abuse. Neglect involves not caring for the resident in the proper way. It can include things like not bathing the resident properly or not feeding them properly. In general, neglect is when the resident is not receiving the proper level of care and their needs are not being met.

A common form of nursing home abuse is financial exploitation. In many nursing homes residents personal property is stolen or their finances mishandled. Stealing anything from a resident is considered a form of abuse.

Reporting Nursing Home Abuse

Any suspicion of abuse should be reported right away. If you are the relative of a resident and suspect abuse you should immediately contact the nursing home management and demand to speak to someone about your suspicions. If the nursing home management does not seem to want to handle the situation then you should get your relative out of the nursing home and report the home to the proper authorities.

Never let nursing home abuse go unhandled. At the first signs of any type of abuse steps must be taken. The elderly cannot always care for themselves or keep themselves safe. They may have physical or mental problems that prevent them from defending themselves. It is up to those of us in a caregiving position to ensure that they are properly cared for and not subjected to abuse.

What you Need to Know About Drug Abuse Treatment Procedures

The meaning of “drug abuse” is described as the consumption of psychoactive drugs and sports performance enhancement drugs for non-medical purposes. Some examples of exploited drugs include alcohol, barbiturates, morphine, benzodiazepines, cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, and other opiates like hydrocodone and codeine. The other drug abuse meaning may also be grouped into four clear-cut groups: the medical definitions, the mass contact and argot usage, the social wellness definitions, and the political and criminal classifications.

Since substance abuse and drug addiction can do harm to an individual, it is important to encourage the drug addicted person to obtain drug addiction treatment. There are different kinds of addictive drugs existing nowadays. The substance abuse treatment methodology may be different from one drug variant to another. The treatment methodologies also depend on the uniqueness of the people with addiction problems and they may be different when it comes to the methodologies. A number of the addicted people face problems regarding physical and psychological issues. On other hand, there are a few addicted people who face problems regarding job-related or public issues. Unfortunately, public issues create a great deal of struggle to deal with addictive disorders/addictive conditions of the people who are addicted to illegal substances.

The attempt to stop the misuse of drugs fall short most of the time. While there are a number of evidences of short-term feats, the long-term feats are still rare. There are a number of treatment processes that were invented to help drug dependents stop their drug addiction. The treatment methodologies are consist of various approaches like damage minimization, abstinence-based systems, therapeutic treatments, pharmacotherapeutics, and legal means. The drug abuse treatment processes are separated into two groups. The first class includes a number of common drug abuse treatment services while the second set includes the criminal justice-involved treatment procedures.

DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT METHODOLOGIES:

(1) Agonist Maintenance Cure:

This treatment technique is widely used to fight drug abuse and it is often called the methadone treatment procedure. In this program, some synthetic and opiate substances such as LAAM or methadone are applied. These substances are consumed continuously at an amount that is enough to prevent the elimination of opiate and to stop the effects caused by misusing opiates. Craving for opiates also lowers as time goes by. Comprehensive counseling is ordinarily done along with this treatment process.

(2) Narcotic Antagonist Cure with Naltrexone Application:

Generally, this treatment program is an extension of the previously mentioned drug abuse treatment program. Here, Naltrexone is utilized as a replacement for LAAM or methadone, as a synthetic and long-lasting antagonist. It is of significance that the drug dependent person person is free from the opiates for some days so that the Naltrexone could be utilized. Now it has to be mentioned that this antagonist doesn’t have any subjective prospects of addiction and it has some effects too. Rehab and counseling are also required in this kind.

(3) Outpatient Drug-Free Cure:

This methodology of drug abuse treatment is becoming popular as days go by. This process is not associated with rehab. In this case, the necessary medications are given after hearing the statement of the addictive patient. As an alternative to individual counseling, the group counseling occurs in this drug abuse cure program. This program is less costly as compared to the two previously mentioned categories. This treatment procedure goes well with workers, students and those people with wide social and family encouragement.

(4) Long-Term Residential Treatment Program:

In this case, the people with addiction problems are allowed to enter especially made residential drug abuse treatment hubs with non-medical surroundings. There are numerous residential treatment services offered. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Therapeutic Community are two of the most famous kinds. These centers include patients, medical experts, counselors and other personnel. The duration of residence lasts for some six months to one year. In that duration of time, the necessary medications are provided to the addictive patients and mental counseling is done. This process is practical for the addictive patients who are unfortunate not to have the public and family encouragement that is needed.

(5) Short-Term Residential Treatment Methods:

This treatment is actually inspired by a model also known as 12-step approach. At First, this procedure was intended for alcohol addiction treatment services, but soon after it was revealed that this process is also helpful for cocaine abuse treatment services.

(6) Medical Detoxification:

In this particular type of drug abuse treatment program, the remains of prohibited drugs are released from the human body. Generally, the human body is detoxified during the period of treatment. The entire procedure is under the strict examination of an experienced physician. Additionally, it is essential to lower the addictive nature of the addictive person through counseling.

(7) Legal Treatment Services:

It is a reality that drug addiction is absolutely illegal. In cases wherein an individual is found abusing addictive drugs, he is required to experience a few drug abuse treatment techniques that comes with the penalty. There are two types of legal treatment services: the prison-based drug abuse treatment program and the community-based treatment program.

Substance abuse treatments will only be successful supposing the addictive person is given encouragement coming from his family, his pals, and the community. The addictive person must stick to the counsels provided to him by a physician or a counselor.

Things You Should Know About Teen Chat Rooms

Do you really know what your teen is doing in that chat room? You might think it’s harmless fun ? and it could be. However, it could also be something far more dangerous, and as a parent you need to find out before problems get started. If you’re going to allow your son or daughter access to a teen chat room, follow these simple tips:

– Monitor the Internet use that your child is involved with. Don’t give them access to the Internet when they’re not supervised.

- Know who your child is talking to in a teen chat room. If you don’t know them and your child won’t introduce them, they should be blocked and have no further contact with your child.

- Make sure your son or daughter is only going to a teen chat room that’s moderated by adults.

Another thing you should know about teen chat rooms is that teens often use a lot of acronyms and abbreviations so that adults don’t understand what they’re saying. Avoid this problem by knowing some of these common terms:

1. AITR: This abbreviation is for Adult In The Room.

2. P911: Parent Emergency ? used when it parent suddenly appears or becomes nosy. There are a lot of different ways to say this.

3. MIRL: Meet In Real Life. This is an important one and can be especially dangerous. You should know where your teen is and who he or she is meeting with at all times.

4. S2R: Send To Receive (pictures) ? this could be innocent, but sometimes pornographic pictures are sent this way, as well.

5. LMIRL: (Lets) Meet In Real Life. Just a variation on number nine.

6. CD9: Code 9 ? this is a more hidden way of saying that parents are around.

7. E or X: Ecstasy (the drug). This could be vital teen chat information and help you as a parent determine if your child has a drug problem or if he or she is being offered drugs in a teen chat room.

8. ASL(R P) : Age Sex Location (Race / Picture). Obviously a concern. Gender and race are not that important, but age, sex, and location, as well as a picture, could lead a sexual predator right to your child’s doorstep.

9. TDTM: Talk Dirty To Me. Not much to say about this one. It could easily be the first sign a parent might have that their teen either is, or is about to become, sexually active.

Did You Know That Teen Depression Can Lead to Self-harm and Mutilation?

Are you aware if your teen purposely injures herself? Teen depression or anxiety can trigger this response to stress, and you might not even know about it.

Do You Know Why You’re Overweight?

You may often hear laymen express the view that some people are fat because of “glandular trouble.” Such cases actually are very few. The reason most people are fat is simply because they eat more food than they actually need for their activities. The only way to cut down on weight is to cut down on eating, to reduce the number of calories in your daily diet.

What Causes Overweight?

There are many causes for over

Teen Girls Now Abuse Drugs More Than Boys. How to Know if your “little Girl” Has a Drug Problem

It’s official, teen girls now have more problems with drug and alcohol abuse than do teen boys; and they more than likely are using drugs or alcohol for completely different reasons. Additionally, because they don?t often show the same type of behavioral disturbances as do teen boy substance abusers, girls often continue to use for longer at unsafe levels before parents ever know the real extent o the problem.

Firstly, teen girls don?t use drugs and alcohol for the same reason that teen boys do (Why teen girls get addicted ). Teenage boys tend to use drugs and alcohol recreationally, and use for the excitement, fun and experimentation that drugs promise. Girls are far more likely to take drugs or alcohol as a way to combat low self esteem, to gain self confidence in a group, to attract the attention of older teen boys who also use, and to use drugs as a way to combat feelings of depression and anxiety.

Girls suffer more from drug abuse

Unfortunately, teen girls also seem to be uniquely affected by their drug use, and teen girls (already at a higher risk for depression that teen boys) if using and abusing drugs or alcohol are two and a half times more likely to experience clinical depression. They are also far more likely to experience an unwanted pregnancy, contract an STD and also to use drugs for properties such as weight loss.

The problem with pills

Teen girls are especially attracted to prescription pills, attracted by the ease of access, the perception of safety, and the perception of positive side effects (decreased anxiety and weight loss). With some prescription pain killers every bit as addictive as heroin, this is problematic.

Additionally, teen girls tend to abuse for longer on average before receiving intervention and professional help. Teen boys using drugs and alcohol are more likely to get in trouble at school, more likely to get into fights or problems with the law, or more likely to have a DUI; while teen girl users tend to avoid most of these problems. The problem is that without some of these obvious signs of use, parents and teachers remain unaware of the level of use, and are unable to intervene in a timely manner.

Parents need to be on the lookout for drug and alcohol use and abuse in teenage girls, and understand that some of the signs may not obviously point to drug use.

Increasing moodiness and depression is a normal sign of drug use and abuse that very rarely gets identified as such, with parents misattributing changes in behavior to the normal expressions of adolescence. While some moodiness can obviously be expected during the formative adolescent years, excessive signs of depression are not normal; and very likely indicate a greater problem.

If your teen no longer has any interest in family activities or wants to spend all of their time in their room, you should be concerned.

If your teen no longer cares as much about their appearance, you should be concerned.

If your teen suddenly drops all old friends for an assortment of new, and seemingly unsavory friends; you should be concerned.

If grades suddenly slip, you should be concerned.

Any or all of these behavioral signs may or may not indicate a problem with drugs or alcohol, but they are worrying behaviors and they do need to be investigated; and if your child is not experimenting or abusing drugs or alcohol, they may be enduring some form of clinical depression. A professional diagnosis can be very helpful for parents concerned about the health and safety of an at risk teen.

You can never protect your teen from all of the dangers out there, but you can do a lot simply by staying involved and active in their life, by leading with a good example on drugs and alcohol use, and by having clear and understood rules on the use of any form of drugs or alcohol.

Talk to your teen, stay involved, make time for mutually enjoyable activities; you’ll be in a far better position to evaluate what changes in behavior may mean, and how far from normal these changes really are.

How Do You Know If The One You Love Will Ever Get Over His Addictions?

I have left a bf because he is addicted to things that I am not. His addictions wreaked havoc onto our relationship. He even lied to cover them up and was mean and defensive when I told him he had to stop.
I’m not waiting for him to recover…my question is is there a chance he will? What are the statistics on rehab?
Are addicts just addicts or do they ever fully recover?
Please, mental health professionals out there? Answer anyone?

Pregnancy, Prenatals, Healthy Baby – What You Need to Know

Pregnancy is such a critical time. A woman’s body is drastically changing and the baby inside is creating new demands on the mother’s body. You want to do everything you can right to make sure that your baby is healthy and has a good start in life.

Some birth defects have been linked to the lack of vitamins and minerals. How do you pick the correct prenatal vitamins to ensure a healthy pregnancy? Should you just rely on your physician or should you know more? Should you take prenatals even after your pregnancy? We looked deeper into what a mother really needs to know before and after pregnancy.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is such a critical time, and you want to do everything you can to provide the “just right” array of vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Pregnancy and breastfeeding place tremendous demands on your body and can deplete omega-3 fatty acids. Target each stage of pregnancy with the perfect balance of nutrients.

Studies have shown that moms who receive the recommended amount of DHA during pregnancy have babies with increased attention spans throughout the first two years of life. The benefits of taking omega-3 DHA before, during, and after pregnancy are truly amazing.

Remember, your baby will take what it needs first to develop and grow, and therefore, your body may suffer if you are not getting enough of the necessary vitamins and minerals needed throughout pregnancy.

Healthy Baby

Every vitamin, every mineral, every nutrient has an important job to do now, for you and your growing baby. Your growing baby’s development depends on it. The right vitamins help build your baby’s bones and teeth and ensure your baby has a healthy start in life.

Eating a variety of healthy foods is important, but with hectic schedules, morning sickness, and the changing nutritional demands of your developing baby, it can be difficult to achieve the right nutritional balance. Nutrition is also critically important during recovery and while you are breastfeeding your newborn baby.

Prenatal Vitamins

Prenatal vitamins are packed full of nutrients that will help support and nourish your growing child and your body during pregnancy. How do you determine which prenatal vitamins are right for you? What do you look for in prenatal vitamins?

Prenatal vitamin supplements are vitamin supplements that a woman can take on a daily basis to ensure that she is obtaining appropriate quantities of essential nutrients during pregnancy. Prenatal nutrition is important but nausea and vomiting can cause women to miss meals and important nutrients from both a balanced diet and prenatal vitamin supplementation.

Just picking up some ordinary vitamins at the drugstore is not enough for a healthy pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins contain important nutrients in stronger dosages than regular multivitamin supplements (even those formulated for women). A good vitamin does not take the place of eating nutritiously but it can balance the scales in your favor, and your baby’s too. Researchers at the University of Maryland have noticed that many commonly prescribed prenatal vitamins do not dissolve well resulting in insufficient absorption of the nutrients.

The March of Dimes reports that birth defects of the spine, skull, and brain, such as spina bifida and anencephaly, are more likely to occur if the mother does not get sufficient folic acid during the first few weeks of her pregnancy – even before she knows she is pregnant.

Prenatal vitamins can reduce risk of childhood cancers and omega fish oil intake has been linked to higher IQ in offspring. New research from the Boston University School of Medicine is recommending higher intakes of vitamin D as so many are deficient. The women’s levels of vitamin D were related to the frequency of milk consumption and prenatal vitamin use.

Increased zinc and vitamin B6 levels can boost immunities needed after pregnancy and sufficient B6 has been shown to provide infant growth advantages. This B vitamin can prevent neural tube defects when taken early in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Zinc supports normal growth and development during pregnancy.

Calcium and magnesium supplementation are so important during pregnancy. A good prenatal vitamin should include folic acid and calcium, among other nutrients that are important to a healthy pregnancy and baby. In the last trimester of pregnancy, skeletal growth is highest and the fetus draws calcium directly from the mother’s stores. In addition, clinical trials have shown that adequate calcium during pregnancy lowers blood pressure and may reduce the incidence of premature births. Magnesium promotes the health of bones and may help maintain normal blood pressure and muscle comfort during pregnancy.

Folic acid is the most commonly prescribed prenatal supplement for the months prior to becoming pregnant as well and it is essential for the health and growth of the baby, especially for brain functions.

The female body’s requirement for vitamin C increases during pregnancy as this vitamin promotes the normal growth of the baby and supports building strong bones and teeth. It also supports the absorption of another key nutrient during pregnancy: iron.

Iron is recommended to prevent the mother suffering from anemia due to the demands that the baby puts on her iron consumption. Iron is an important mineral and is responsible for helping the mother and the baby’s blood to carry oxygen. Iron deficiencies can lead to severe birth defects for the baby.

Women have an increased requirement for biotin during pregnancy, and a biotin deficiency may occur in as many as 50 percent of pregnant women. This deficiency may increase the risk of birth defects.

Adequate amounts of vitamin A help to promote the health of the baby by promoting normal growth and development of the embryo and fetus, and supporting genes that determine the sequential development of organs in embryonic development. Beta-carotene is a nutrient from plants that the body converts into vitamin A.

Prenatal vitamins can be taken after pregnancy to provide a well-balanced supplementation program. With a mother’s hectic schedule and lack of time, prenatal vitamins are a perfect choice for an after pregnancy supplement regimen.

The correct prenatals are essential for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Doing your research on prenatal vitamins can be very rewarding and time well spent to ensure an easy and successful pregnancy.

Some prenatal supplements can cause horrible morning sickness, be hard to swallow and really not deliver the proper amount of vitamins. We have reviewed several prenatals. For more free information and to see our choice of prenatals Click Here:

Do You Know the Health Risks of Being Overweight?

Do You Know the Health Risks of Being Overweight?

* Are You Overweight?

* What Is Your Waist Measurement?

* What Are the Risks to Your Health of Being Overweight?

* How You Can Lower Your Health Risks

If you are overweight, you are more likely to develop health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain types of cancer, gout (joint pain caused by excess uric acid), and gallbladder disease. Being overweight can also cause problems such as sleep apnea (interrupted breathing during sleep) and osteoarthritis (wearing away of the joints). The more overweight you are, the more likely you are to have health problems. Weight loss can help improve the harmful effects of being overweight. However, many overweight people have difficulty reaching their healthy body weight. Studies show that you can improve your health by losing as little as 10 to 20 pounds.

What Is Your Waist Measurement?

If you are a woman and your waist measures more than 35 inches, or if you are a man and your waist measures more than 40 inches, you are more likely to develop heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers. You may want to talk to your doctor or other health professional about the health risks of your weight.

What Are the Risks to Your Health of Being Overweight?

1. Heart Disease and Stroke

Heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death and disability for both men and women in the United States. Overweight people are more likely to have high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, than people who are not overweight. Very high blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides (blood fats) can also lead to heart disease and often are linked to being overweight. Being overweight also contributes to angina (chest pain caused by decreased oxygen to the heart) and sudden death from heart disease or stroke without any signs or symptoms.

The good news is that losing a small amount of weight can reduce your chances of developing heart disease or a stroke. Reducing your weight by 10 percent can decrease your chance of developing heart disease by improving how your heart works, blood pressure, and levels of blood cholesterol and triglycerides.

2.Diabetes

Noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 2 diabetes) is the most common type of diabetes in the United States. Type 2 diabetes reduces your body’s ability to control your blood sugar. It is a major cause of early death, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and blindness. Overweight people are twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes as people who are not overweight. You can reduce your risk of developing this type of diabetes by losing weight and by increasing your physical activity.

If you have type 2 diabetes, losing weight and becoming more physically active can help control your blood sugar levels. If you use medicine to control your blood sugar, weight loss and physical activity may make it possible for your doctor to decrease the amount of medication you need.

3.Cancer

Several types of cancer are associated with being overweight. In women, these include cancer of the uterus, gallbladder, cervix, ovary, breast, and colon. Overweight men are at greater risk for developing cancer of the colon, rectum, and prostate. For some types of cancer, such as colon or breast, it is not clear whether the increased risk is due to the extra weight or to a high-fat and high-calorie diet.

4.Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that is closely associated with being overweight. Sleep apnea can cause a person to stop breathing for short periods during sleep and to snore heavily. Sleep apnea may cause daytime sleepiness and even heart failure. The risk for sleep apnea increases with higher body weights. Weight loss usually improves sleep apnea.

5.Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a common joint disorder that most often affects the joints in your knees, hips, and lower back. Extra weight appears to increase the risk of osteoarthritis by placing extra pressure on these joints and wearing away the cartilage (tissue that cushions the joints) that normally protects them. Weight loss can decrease stress on the knees, hips, and lower back and may improve the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

6. Gout

Gout is a joint disease caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid sometimes forms into solid stone or crystal masses that become deposited in the joints. Gout is more common in overweight people and the risk of developing the disorder increases with higher body weights.

Note: Over the short term, some diets may lead to an attack of gout in people who have high levels of uric acid or who have had gout before. If you have a history of gout, check with your doctor or other health professional before trying to lose weight.

7. Gallbladder Disease

Gallbladder disease and gallstones are more common if you are overweight. Your risk of disease increases as your weight increases. It is not clear how being overweight may cause gallbladder disease.

How You Can Lower Your Health Risks

If you are overweight, losing as little as 5 to 10 percent of your body weight may improve many of the problems linked to being overweight, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds and are considered overweight on the weight-for-height chart, you would need to lose 10 to 20 pounds. Even a small weight loss can improve your health.

Slow and steady weight loss of no more than 1 pound per week is the safest way to lose weight. Very rapid weight loss can cause you to lose muscle rather than fat. It also increases your chances of developing other problems, such as gallstones, gout, and nutrient deficiencies. Making long-term changes in your eating and physical activity habits is the best way to lose weight and keep it off over time.

* Eat Better: Whether you are trying to lose weight or maintain your weight, you should take a look at your eating habits and try to improve them. Try to eat a variety of foods, especially pasta, rice, bread, and other whole-grain foods. You should also eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. These foods will fill you up and are lower in calories than foods full of oils or fats. .

* Increase Physical Activity: Making physical activity a part of your daily life is an important way to help control your weight and lower your risk for health problems. Spend less time in activities that use little energy like watching television and playing video games and more time in physical activities. Try to do at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day on most days of the week. The activity does not have to be done all at once. It can be done in short spurts–10 minutes here, 20 minutes there–as long as it adds up to 30 minutes a day. Simple ways to become more physically active include walking to the store or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

If you are not overweight but health problems related to being overweight run in your family, it is important that you try to keep your weight steady. If you have family members with weight-related health problems, you are more likely to develop them yourself. If you are not sure of your risk of developing a weight-related health problem, you should talk to your health care provider.

The One Thing You Need to Know about Team Motivation

Let me ask you a simple question. Do you, as a manager, want a highly motivated team who don?t take time off work, who achieve their goals and objectives, and don?t stress you out in the process?
I?m sure the answer is – Yes! However, you?re no doubt asking how you?re supposed to achieve this ?miracle.?

The one thing you need to know about team motivation is that ? there?s no such thing! Okay, so the football manager ?motivates? the team by getting them together at half-time and ?explaining? how they?re about to lose the game unless they start to play a lot better. (This, of course, is the polite version)

However, the only way to build a highly motivated team is to concentrate on individual motivation and create an environment where the individual ?motivates them self.?
Every member of your team is a complex and complicated human being and they all have different needs. Your job, as a Motivational Manager, is to find out what these needs are, and satisfy them.

There are 3 actions you can take

1. Spend some quality time with each team member – One or two minutes of quality time on a regular basis is far more productive than an appraisal once a year. You need to get to know the individual better and they need to get to know you. You?ll gain a much better understanding of them and how they?re handling the job. It will also send the message that you care about them and show that you?re there to help with problems, both personal and business.

2. Give feedback and coach them – You need to regularly tell each of your team members when they?re doing well and when not so well.
This is where so many employers and managers fall down in dealing with their people; they’re hopeless at giving feedback! Many managers are uncomfortable telling staff how they feel about their work performance. Some managers still believe – “Why should I praise people when they’re only doing what they’re paid to do!”
However, most employees want to know how they are performing in their job; they want to know if they are doing it right or how they could do it better.
If you really want to motivate your team members then you need to ?catch them doing something right? and tell them about it. If, on the other hand, you hear or observe them doing something you?re not happy about, then you need to tell them what needs improved and coach them.
It?s important to tell the team member when they?re not performing. There are too many managers who either ignore poor behaviour or come down on the person like a ton of bricks. There are particular ways to give feedback and coach and they?re described in detail in my book ? How to be a Motivational Manager.

3. Be a believer – You need to constantly demonstrate to the team member that you trust and believe in them, by what you say, your tone of voice and your body language.
They will very quickly sense if you don’t trust them to carry out their job and they’ll act accordingly.
If you believe that your people are not to be trusted to do their job; that they?ll turn up late and go home early, then that is exactly what they’ll do.
On the other hand, if you believe that your people will do their job well, that they can be trusted to make decisions that are good for the business and that they’ll give you a fair day’s work, then it is more likely this is what you’ll get.
As with all theories, there is no guarantee that this will work every time. However the majority of people in this world are reasonable people; if you treat them as such they’re more likely to behave in a positive manner.

So there you have it; Motivational Managers know that to get the best out of their people they need to concentrate on the human interactions and make that emotional connection with each individual team member.

Headaches During Pregnancy, are They Normal. Do You Know How to Ease Your Pregnancy Headaches?

Headaches during pregnancy are very challenging as over the counter pain killers are not recommended. Read on to see what you can do to relieve the pain from your headaches during pregnancy.

First of all let?s address why some pregnant women suffer from headaches during pregnancy. Within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy the surging hormones play a part in the development of pregnancy headaches. The 40% increase in blood volume that occurs during pregnancy increases pressure within the blood vessels and this itself can cause pregnancy headaches. Headaches during the last month of pregnancy may also be caused by a condition called preeclampsia, which is associated with high blood pressure, swelling and protein in the urine.

It is normal to have headaches during pregnancy because of the above reasons plus the following:

Stress

Lack of sleep

Vomiting

Low blood sugar

Dehydration

Caffeine withdrawal

Nicotine withdrawal

Poor posture

Pregnancy related vision changes

What you can do to ease your pregnancy headaches:

Reduce stress.

Get more sleep.

Treat your early morning sickness.

Eat regularly to avoid low blood sugar levels.

Drink adequate amounts of high quality water.

Get chiropractic adjustments and advice to correct your posture.

Avoid over the counter medication especially during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Consult a homeopath or an acupuncturist for treatments to relieve your pain.

Pregnancy headaches are sometimes relieved with either hot or cold compress around your forehead and on the back of your neck.

Have someone massage your shoulders and neck during acute pregnancy headaches.

Rest in a dark room and practice deep relaxation breathing.

Relaxing in a warm bath or shower sometimes reduces the stress and tension.

The fruit mangosteen is well known to support every system in the body. It is all natural and can relieve and prevent pregnancy headaches.

You tried all the above and you still have a pregnancy headache:

At this point it would be appropriate to call your doctor or midwife for advice.

Have your eyesight checked as you may need glasses or a change in glasses.
